Is lemon water better for you first thing in the morning than coffee? Hydration is crucial to optimal performance in athletics! It’s no surprise that 90% of Americans walk around in a dehydrated state, especially in a culture that drinks the highest percentage of caffeine and alcohol. The first thing most Americans think of in the morning is coffee and the first thing they think of at night is alcohol; yet none of us consider drinking water first thing in the morning! The minimum recommended dose for water consumption is 0.5 ounces per pound of bodyweight. A 200lb individual would need a minimum of 100 ounces of water in this example. Athletes who train 5-6 days a week will need closer to 1-1.5 ounces per pound of bodyweight for optimal performance. I personally drink around 24 ounces of warm water and fresh squeezed lemon juice first thing in the morning before I brew my coffee. This helps flush the digestive system and rehydrate the body. Give this a try for a week and see if you notice your digestion and energy levels increase throughout the week!
